One of my earliest memories of Melbourne surrounds the Supper Club pre-Siglo. This incredible collection of places to eat and drink at made an instant impact. We went back for more, again and again; despite the headache the next morning.
We never really learned our lesson, as all good and bad drinkers tend to do. Funnily enough, this means this venue is etched into our minds like not many other places that we cannot remember!
When you set a trend you can stay in front of the crowd and stay relevant. That is basically what Supper Club has done for many years. At a time when competition was beginning to hot up, there was a dramatic pivot where Supper Club became the entrance to Siglo. When you couldn’t get up to where the cool kids were you opted to lounge around on random couches downstairs facing Parliament, getting to look through glass, and feeling warm and comfortable. When you could get up you would, but there was the feeling that at some stage you belong downstairs.
If there was one dish that you had to order on each occasion at Supper Club it is the croque monsieur or better known “toastie”. While it has changed a number of times over the years the ingredients are obviously similar to the French classic. If you are rolling in free cashflow you can opt for one of the many expensive bottles of Champagne or other accomplished wines, but there is never anything wrong with the selections on the by the glass list.
Melbourne Supper Club would be on my list of places to enjoy my last meal. An institution that is equal parts toastie, wine, company, and atmosphere; sometimes in that order!
