Birregurra – the home of Brae

I enjoyed a short trip to Birregurra in August 2014. Even though the time was brief, we had a chance to stay at a beautiful B&B, eat at a fantastic cafe and provedore, dine at one of Australia’s best restaurants, and eat breakfast at the B&B which was noteworthy in its own right.

Harvest

Harvest Birregurra Bed & Breakfast

Harvest is a charming bed & breakfast close to the main town centre of Birregurra.

The homestead is beautiful inside and out. Comfortable and stylish furnishings fill the “ballroom” we stayed in and there is one other room available, so demand is high! Outside there is a beautiful garden.

Fiona and Steve own and run the B&B and are extremely hospitable. We had pre-arranged Steve to drive us to Brae in his “Chariot” and they were kind enough to organise us a transfer back from Brae once we finished our meal.

The breakfast we had at Harvest was nothing short of sensational. I highly recommend the small extra cost of getting a cooked breakfast but be ready to skip lunch!

Shiitake Pizza

Birregurra Farm Foods

There is something about a country provedore that is very exciting, but frustrating at the same time. Sure, there is amazing produce on offer, and many products that don’t need further preparation, but where is your kitchen to cook those amazing sausages in? If you have the opportunity to stay at a place you can cook in, then the provedore is even more exciting and a lot less frustrating! You can also grab a few ingredients on the way home.

What’s more is the cafe connected to the provedore serves brilliant pizza. Click on the title to read about the cafe.

Brae was awarded Victoria’s best restaurant by The Age Good Food Guide and best regional restaurant by Australian Gourmet Traveller (and fifth in Australia overall). Dan Hunter is the owner/chef and his repertoire is quite incredible. Using the restaurant garden he starts with the freshest produce and transforms it into the very best of contemporary dishes while respecting its character.
